"After an unexpected life transition, we were exploring the idea of launching our own unique business in the Fraser Valley. After visiting some friends in another city and experiencing our first board game cafe, we began to think about what something like that might look like in Abbotsford. So, we began to do market research and the legwork of developing a business concept and plan.
After a few months, we had come up with a great concept and had developed a business plan, done our market research, and had even found the perfect location. All that was standing in our way was some more funding to get things off the ground. We tried two traditional lenders that both were unable to help us due to our young business and lack of experience. This was when we found Community Futures. Dennis and the team were able to find a solution for us and support us throughout the whole start-up process. Not only did they help with start-up funding but, through the Self-Employment Program, were able to help give us relevant training and support that helped us make informed decisions on human resources, marketing, and finances.
Without the help, guidance, and support of Community Futures, we never would have been able to take our dream and turn it into a reality! Now, we have an exciting and successful business that has accomplished more than we initially imagined it could!"

Early Start Autism Therapy Ltd
In 2013 I was planning to start an autism therapy services company in the Fraser Valley and was searching for financing to cover initial start up costs. After meeting with my bank, I was disappointed to learn that I was not eligible for traditional financing because my company was new and did not have a history of receivables. At that time I was referred to Community Futures and my journey began.
From the beginning of the process to the current day I have had an extremely positive experience working with Community Futures. I initially created a proposal to request start up funding. However, I quickly discovered this was only part of the service that Community Futures provides for its clientele. I was a novice business owner and while I had a passion and vision for my company, I had limited hands on experience running the operations of a business. Dennis and his team provided support, guidance and encouragement to assist in many aspects of the business.
The services provided by Community Futures over the past three years have allowed Early Start Autism Therapy to grow and flourish. We now have more than 20 staff members who currently provide therapy to 50 families throughout the Fraser Valley. I am thankful to have had the support of this organization!

Laura Carter – Carter Hearing Limited
Laura came to Community Futures with an idea. After working 10 years in the hearing industry she saw the need for a more caring company that could help people locally and also help people in surrounding areas that had no access to hearing specialists. After attending a free market research workshop she uncovered that she was correct in her assumption and she entered the Community Futures Self-Employment Program. "The workshops and staff were great! They really helped me go in the right direction".
After launching her business she was relieved to be able to access Community Futures for a small business loan that enabled her to successfully launch in all three communities and to get her mobile unit up and running.
Laura hates the idea of hearing loss lowering the quality of life for people. She's always dreamed about having her own hearing clinic and now she does. Nowadays, Carter Hearing Limited has part time offices in Chilliwack, Hope, and Princeton. In fact, before Laura set up shop, Hope and Princeton had never had their own hearing clinics. Carter Hearing Limited now has contracts to serve First Nations communities throughout the Fraser Valley, all the way up to Lillooet, with its mobile unit.
All of this means that a lot of people who lacked hearing services in the past are experiencing major improvements in their quality of life. It's a dream come true for them—as well as for Laura.
Carter Hearing is dedicated to the highest level of care for their clients. From the first visit to on-going support, you will find their professional clinic team with you every step of the way because they believe that hearing well is part of leading a healthy happy life.
Laura currently has 2 full time and 4 part time employees.
Net Zero Waste Abbotsford
“Community Futures South Fraser provided us with a loan beyond what our Senior Lender provided which helped us fund our first facility expansion. This expansion has allowed our business to grow and to continue to be successful. Staff from CFSF have always been professional and have taken the time to visit our site and understand our operation. I would recommend CFSF to any other business owners within the Fraser Valley that are considering subordinated debt which may not qualify at the Senior Banks.”
“Net Zero Waste Abbotsford provides a sustainable organic recycling solution for Abbotsford residents, farmers and businesses. Our site processes over 25,000 tons of organic waste annually saving local communities considerable money by avoiding much higher “landfill” disposal fees. We process food and yard waste from the City of Abbotsford and Chilliwack as well as from local farmers and businesses. We are working with the Leqamel First Nation to capture their waste and that from other first nations communities in our region. Our process encapsulates the materials under a “Gore-Tex” Jacket to ensure no odour escapes. We are proud that we have never had an odour complaint – an issue which has recently plagued many municipalities within Metro Vancouver.
In 2015 we started our education program to create a unique out of the classroom learning opportunity and have now hosted over 500 local students at the composting facility. We are honored to accommodate post-secondary academic research studies from the University of the Fraser Valley, Kwantlen Polytechnique University as well as UBC. Net Zero Waste Abbotsford works with BC Agriculture in Classroom, by providing soil for their highly reputable “Spuds in Tubs” program. This year our soil was used in 44 local Schools with excellent results and lots of spuds for our successful little farmers. Finally we offer a Compost facility Operator Training Program to help educate other facility operators from within BC with training completed on-site. These operating courses are 4 days long and combine field work with tours of local operations, classroom based learning modules and guest speakers from within the industry. We are proud to be a part of the Abbotsford Community and to supply the very best soil to help Valley residents have the most impressive gardens in the Province!
